and the best part is, this has NOTHING to do w mating at all, this “pelvic thrust” is literally how they hunt for worms
we’re not sure why they do it, i mean there’s speculation that perhaps they’re sending down vibrations into the earth and listening for panicked worm noises or maybe even using it like weird bird sonar by bouncing vibrations off things in the dirt
but yes, this is the hunting behavior of the noble timberdoodle, better known as the american woodcock
