To preempt someone is to do something before they can. Like, “I preemptively bitchslapped him before he could say something dumb” to use an awkward pre-caffeine example. Sounds like you’re fine.
That’s how I’ve always used it but I was trying to double-check the adjectival form and I confused myself a lot.
